Fat Cat greed and hypocrisy continues unabated!

The New York Times reports that Citigroup one of the major banks who has been a recipient of the recent US Government bail out "is buying a brand new $50 million corporate jet for its executives".  Personally I think the New York Post has it right with it's headline "Just Plane Despicable!"

A change is gonna come...

Jonathan Clarke, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs on the changes in American Politics...

In many ways, the 2008 election represented a direct repudiation of the neo-con style of foreign policy based on military-centred, unilateralist overreaching.

At first sight, the incoming Obama administration appears to be the polar opposite of neo-conservatism.  Its instincts are multilateralist, being committed, for example, to adhering to the Kyoto Protocol and to international agreements like the Geneva Convention.  It places a high priority on diplomacy, with President-elect Obama being open to direct talks with long-ignored countries like Iran and Cuba. Defense Secretary Gates, who is remaining in office, has made it clear that he regards military intervention as the genuinely last option.  Furthermore, the financial meltdown and the drains of the Iraq and Afghan wars have chipped away at the pre-eminence of US power. It is difficult to argue today that the US enjoys a unipolar advantage.

The safest bet, therefore, is that we can bid adieu to the neo-cons and leave their role to be adjudicated by history.  They themselves argue that they form part of the mainstream of American history. It seems more likely that they will come to be seen as an aberration.

Dubya has left the building!

At last!  The world can breathe a sigh of relief, the Bush Dynasty is over, the Neo-Con experiment has failed catastrophically... unfortunatley they leave the world in a mess, their economic policy of feed the rich and hope it gets passed down to the poor doesn't work, their foreign policy of bomb the world into submission has left widows and orphans in it's wake (on all sides!) - nb. the last day of the Neo-Con regime saw the UN report that over 50,000 people have been bombed out of house and home in the US Government backed Israeli assualt on Gaza! - and their pandering to the industrial fat cats has done nothing to preserve the environment and it's resources!

We all know that Obama and team cannot and will not turn the US or the World in an instant, we have to be realistic, but as Tony Blair once said "Things can only get better"!
