A while ago Phil tagged me for this book meme... so here goes (please ignore the word 'One' as I obviously have!)...
One book that changed your life:
'The Hobbit'... as a child this opened up the world of story to me and got me hooked on reading... my only real addiction! Douglas Rushkoff's 'Children of Chaos' and of course David Bosch's 'Transforming Mission'
One book that you have read more than once:
Anthony Burgess' Clockwork Orange and Colin MacInnes' Absolute beginners' have been read many times! long with the usual things like 'Lord of the Rings' TBH though I don't tend to read books again that often... it has to be a while between readings... because I have a pictorial mind (books play in my mind like films - I see the characters, the sets etc. in full detail), once I start reading a book a second time the whole story comes screaming back in an instant and the whole exercise becomes pointless!
One book you'd want on a desert island:
The complete works of Shakespeare! I know, but I love Shakespeare, always have done and there is every kind of story in there, from Romance, Political intrigue, Murder mystery, Comedy and Horror.
One book that made you laugh:
OK... intellectual image out of the window here... I love Terry Pratchett!... In particular the Rincewind books... also the book he wrote with Neil Gaiman 'Good Omens' a spoof on the 'Beast' theme... classic lines like, two of the Devils greatest works... the M25 and the way that any cassette left in a car for more than 6 months supernaturally morphs into 'Queens greatest hits'... on a more intellectual not Umberto Eco's 'Baudolino' made me chuckle.
One book that made you cry:
Bizarrely I could quote Barky's answer word for word.. Books don't make me cry but like Barky, the hopelessness of 'Brave New World' was deeply sad, 'Frankenstein' had a similar effect on me. Coupland's 'Hey Nostradamus' is incredibly poignant too. Lastly, 'Birdsong' Sebastian Faulks.
One book that you wish had been written:
'Toddlers Tantrums... Solved!'
One book that you wish had never been written:
This one is easy... anything by Dan Brown! Although saying that, that would imply Brown is a 'Writer' and that would be stretching the definition just a bit too much for me... so, seeing as the same applies to Barbara Cartland and Jackie Collins it would have to be 'Hannibal' the follow up to 'The Silence of the Lambs' ... done for commercial reasons with increasingly unbelievable and gruesome plots. (Lou says 'Mein Kampf' - good call!)
One book that you're currently reading:
'Brendan' the Novel by Frederick Buechner, on the bedside table queue... Douglas Coupland's 'jPod' and Paolo Coehlo's 'The Zahir'... and on the desk 'Breaking the Missional Code' Stetzer and Putman
One book you've been meaning to read:
The list is way too long to even start... I have a pile on my desk!
Now who to tag... think I'll leave that till we get back... but you better start thinking Jem! ;)
