In the midst of the Blah Road Tour... (Ryan kept calling Jonny the 'Roadie' which meant that I couldn't get the image of Jonny in a faded Motorhead T-shirt out of my brain!)... Richard Sudworth (CMS and Sanctuary) gave a great presentation on the dialouge between Emerging Church and Inter-faith Mission... Below is a summary of the Lessons and Challenges (only a bit of the talk - maybe Rich might make the whole presentation available on-line at some point)...
Lessons for Inter-faith Mission from the EC:-
- Faith as journey
- Symbolism and ritual (eastern sensuality over western rationalism) holistic world view
- Lyrical over the polemical (narrative/story)
- Hospitality as sacrament (belonging before believing)
- Being Spiritual (public faith over private religion)
- Earning the right to a seat at the table (waiting over grasping)
- Mission-shaped churches (local organism over global models)
Challenges to the EC from Inter-faith Mission:-
- Where are the gods? – need to be a prophetic voice, challenging not just embracing culture
- Who are my brothers and sisters? – need for an authentic ecclesiology
- What are we aiming for? – need for holistic eschatology
- What keeps us going? – need for a defining spirituality
- Where is the kingdom? – need for an embodied witness
