As part of our Easter season last night we watched 'Jesus de Montreal' ... in some ways over the 17 years since the film was made it has become a bit dated... some of the 'controversial' ideas about Jesus that are in the play itself are no longer controversial or even taken seriously... but it is the bits between the play that are powerful... the righteous anger of the actor playing Christ... sometimes is uncomfortable for those around him... sometimes it is even difficult to bear for the watcher, it often feels a bit inconsiderate! But this is a Man whose view was longer term... not immediate concerns but with a conscience that wants to change the world! I love the scene on the Metro platform... it makes me wonder how I would respond to a human Christ today... would I squirm uncomfortably... snigger behind my hand at this poor lunatic... would he offend my sensibilities? And would I see his death as a personal tragedy... or see the 'bigger picture'?
A prayer from Frank Colquhoun's Parish Prayers (inherited from my Grandfather who was a Reader in the Church of England and given to him by my parents the year that I was born - 1969)
Lord Christ who didst enter into triumph by the hard and lonely way of the Cross: May thy courage and steadfast loyalty, thy unswerving devotion to the Father's will, inspire and strengthen us to tread firmly and with joy the road which love bids us to take, even if it leads through suffering, misunderstanding, and darkness. We ask it for thy sake, who for the joy that was set before thee endured the cross, despising the shame, O Lord, our strength and our Redeemer.
