David Benner in "Psychotherapy and the Spiritual Quest" (1988) warns against a reductionist understanding of both Psychology and Spirituality...
The spiritual quest is, at one level, a psychological quest, and every psychological quest in some ways reflects the basic spiritual quest. Furthermore, psychological and spiritual aspects of human functioning are inextricably connected, and any segregation of spirituality and psychology is, therefore both artificial and destructive.
Psychology (ancient Greek: psyche = "soul" or "mind", logos/-ology = "study of") is an academic and applied field involving the study of mind and behavior. "Psychology" also refers to the application of such knowledge to various spheres of human activity, including problems of individuals' daily lives and the treatment of mental illness.- Wikipedia
