A great hero of mine has passed away... sorry if this blog is getting morbid but... Heinrich Harrer, German Mountaineer and Climber who spent the war years up to the Exile in Tibet. He became a great friend and tutor to the then teenage Dalai Lama. This was at a time when Tibet was a sealed country... His wonderful book and photos were published as "Seven Years in Tibet" which was made into an OK film with Brad Pitt as Harrer. If you haven't read the book, do... and don't be put off by the Hollywood version. He died aged 93.
"Seven Years in Tibet (Paladin Books)" (Heinrich Harrer)
Wherever I live, I shall feel homesick for Tibet. I often think I can still hear the cries of wild geese and cranes and the beating of their wings as they fly over Lhasa in the clear cold moonlight. My heartfelt wish is that my story may create some understanding for a people whose will to live in peace and freedom has won so little sympathy form an indifferent world.
